The Art Fund_Lifting the veil on the art of couture millinery

by Margaret Woodliff | March 03, 2018 | 0 Comments

I am delighted to have been asked to talk about my work as a couture milliner, my sources of inspiration and design methodology for the northern branch of The Art Fund_ at the Northumberland Golf Course on April 11th.

My hat illustrated talk will be part of an exciting afternoon entitled "A Royal Celebration of Hats and Flowers". After a break for tea, when my models will be wearing my hats and headpieces, the second talk will be on the mid 20th century floral designer Constance Spry.

Aged 66 in 1953 Spry was commissioned to arrange the flowers at Westminster Abbey for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, and this started a new style of floral arrangement. Whilst art historian Jean Stokes talks through Spry's work, Sue May will be creating a typical Spry flower display.

Looks like it should be a great afternoon. There are still a limited number of tickets available priced at £35 including afternoon tea. For tickets contact www.artfund.org/northumberland. I just need to choose my hat now!

A Celebration of Alnwick Garden will go to London!

by Margaret Woodliff | December 17, 2017 | 0 Comments

The Great Hat Exhibition will mark next year's London Hat Week, a week long international millinery event, staged across Central London in March 2018.

The exhibition, first organised in 2015, is mastermined by the brilliant fashion team "XTerrace" based at the Central London site of Coventry University. The XTerrace team led by their charismatic Professor (& milliner) Monique Lee Hylands-White, are currently busy organising the next March's exhibition which will be staged in March 2018, at St. Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre (5 mins walk from King's Cross station).

I was stunned when two of my pieces were selected for inclusion in the 2016 exhibition "MillinerXArtisan". So to promote my current work, a few weeks ago I submitted two couture pieces from my Northumberland collection for consideration to be included in the selection for "The Great Hat Exhibition".

Yesterday I received a lovely email from the team at XTerrace advising that both pieces have been selected. So which ones I can hear you asking can you see there in March?

Many of my regular blog readers will be familiar with "An English Country Garden", which has had a very busy year, having been well received both in both Melbourne & Nebraska, not to mention Alnwick! And now it will go to London, too, along with one of my newest pieces "A Celebration of Alnwick Garden". This new piece features totally new techniques for me, and has also been selected as one of the top 30 (out of an exhibition pool of almost 300 hats & headpieces) to be shown at the pre-press launch!

Phew, I am delighted by the news!

by Margaret Woodliff | October 23, 2016 | 0 Comments

Brilliant trip to London for launch parties of The MillinerXArtisan exhibition & The Cupola international hat exhibitions to mark London Hat Week.

A full week in London from Oct 6 - 13th saw me attend the launch parties and see my pieces Weft, Heald Wires, and le recyclage displayed in dramatic settings; attend the book launch for Stephen Jones latest and hear him interviewed by Hiliary Alexander; attend trade fairs, workshops and fit in lots of networking with old and new friends, and lots of milliners of course! A brilliant week and managed to take in Undressed at the V&A, too!!

Thank heaven's for a great AirBnB. What a week! Wow - came home for a rest!
